GRINNER: A New Standard for Battery Detection in E-Waste Recycling
The growing presence of embedded lithium-ion batteries in small electronic devices has become a critical safety challenge for the recycling industry, contributing to an increasing number of fires in treatment facilities across Europe.
GRINNER is an industrial technology that combines artificial intelligence and dual-energy X-ray scanning to automatically detect batteries in waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) before mechanical processing. Developed through a European consortium and implemented under real operating conditions at the GreenWEEE facility in Romania, the system addresses one of the most pressing risks in e-waste treatment.
After one year of operation, GRINNER demonstrates how advanced detection technologies can improve process control, reduce fire risks, and enhance operational safety.
This presentation will share practical insights from industrial deployment, including system integration, performance in real conditions, and the role of such solutions in setting new safety benchmarks for the recycling industry.
