Huayou’s Integrated Closed-Loop Solution in the LFP Supply Chain
Amid the global transition of electric mobility and energy systems, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are gaining increasing attention worldwide due to their strong safety profile and cost advantages. According to the International Energy Agency’s Global EV Outlook 2024, LFP batteries continue to expand their share of the global electric vehicle market, exceeding 70% in China. Beyond the automotive sector, energy storage systems (ESS) have emerged as another key application area.
With high sensitivity to safety and levelized cost of electricity, LFP has become the preferred choice for utility-scale, commercial, and residential energy storage, demonstrating significant growth potential. As the first wave of large-scale power batteries approaches end-of-life, the industry is entering a critical phase for resource recycling. Globally, building a LFP recycling ecosystem presents dual challenges: selecting appropriate processes and ensuring economic viability. Leveraging its well-established industrial foundation, China has developed a comprehensive closed-loop ecosystem spanning resource extraction, material production, and large-scale recycling—offering valuable experience for enhancing the resilience of the global battery supply chain.
Huayou has established an integrated industrial chain that spans upstream phosphate resource development, production of iron phosphate (FP) and LFP materials, and downstream recycling of end-of-life batteries. On the resource side, Huayou has secured upstream capacity in Guizhou Province—one of China’s most resource-rich regions for phosphate ore—ensuring stable and controllable access to raw materials. On the manufacturing side, the company has implemented a global production footprint across Zhejiang, Guangxi, Inner Mongolia, Yunnan, and Guizhou in China, as well as Indonesia.
Huayou currently has an annual LFP production capacity of 500k tonnes, with further expansion plans underway. In recycling, the company has achieved an annual capacity of approximately 100k tonnes of LFP battery black mass, which is expected to exceed 250k tonnes per year by 2027, supporting anticipated global demand growth. To address different application needs, Huayou offers a dual-process solutions combining direct recycling and hydrometallurgy.
For partners with strict requirements on lifecycle carbon footprint, direct recycling restores damaged crystal structures and aims to maintain performance. This process significantly reduces the use of chemical reagents and energy consumption, helping customers achieve more competitive carbon reduction targets. Compared with hydrometallurgy, direct recycling can shorten the production process by approximately 2/3, reduce carbon emissions by at least 50%, and lower material costs by up to 30%.
Meanwhile, hydrometallurgical processes ensure high recovery rates and purity of key materials, with extraction rates of up to 98.5% for cobalt and nickel, and approximately 95% for lithium, providing a stable supply of high-quality recycled inputs. This diversified process allows Huayou to tailor recycling solutions to specific applications. Its highly integrated industrial chain not only reflects scale, but also underpins continuous technological innovation and cost optimization.
Supported by this robust industrial foundation, Huayou is well positioned to unlock the full potential of battery recycling processes and deliver economically efficient solutions that address critical challenges in supply chain security, cost competitiveness, and regulatory compliance.
