The OWL is an automated plastic flake analyzer developed by Ad Rem that combines an XRF sensor and an FTIR spectrometer to simultaneously detect elemental contaminants (such as bromine, chlorine, and antimony) and identify plastic types — including black plastics, which conventional NIR-based systems struggle with. Flakes are automatically picked and placed onto the sensors by a gantry system, eliminating manual handling. Results are displayed in real-time at both individual flake and batch level, with all data stored and exportable. Use cases include supplier material assessment, bromine and POPs compliance monitoring, output quality control, and filler detection.
