Anferra is a Swedish startup, originating from Chalmers University of Technology, with a vision to drive circularity across industries. We have developed an innovative, patent-pending process that transforms steel grinding sludge—a challenging and hazardous waste material—into high-quality flocculants for water treatment and hydrogen gas.
Steel grinding sludge is a byproduct of machining operations that use cutting fluids. Its fine-grained, oily composition makes it flammable and often classified as hazardous waste, posing significant recycling challenges. The shift towards electric arc furnaces further limits recycling opportunities for such waste fractions. As a result, grinding sludge is often landfilled or incinerated, practices that are both unsustainable and increasingly costly.
At Anferra, we specialize in recycling these difficult waste fractions. Our process effectively separates alloying metals, abrasives, and lubricants to produce iron-based flocculants that meet the highest standards for water treatment. What sets us apart is our ability to convert a problematic steel waste material into a valuable, circular chemical—helping industries close the loop on waste.
Our development efforts are supported by leading global manufacturers such as SKF, Scania, and Volvo Group. Together, we aim to redefine waste management in the steel industry and contribute to a more sustainable future.
